EQUIVALENCE
/ ÉQUIVALENCE
This refers to a translation process consisting
in saying the same thing as the original English sentence, but using words or phrases
that will sound more familiar to a French speaker :
- He wouldn't set the Thames on fire (GB)
/ He's not a rocket scientist (US) : Il n'a pas inventé la poudre
(a literal translation — Il ne mettrait pas
le feu à la Tamise — would remain obscure to a French reader)
More examples :
- He's a couch potato (US) : Il passe
sa vie devant la télé / Il est toujours vautré devant la télé / C'est
un téléphage (couch potato means literally "patate de canapé")
- a B.S. degree (AM 87) : une licence
ès sciences (B.S. is short for Bachelor of Science)
- smokestack industries (AM 86) :
les industries traditionnelles (literally "les industries à cheminées")
- the violence in the junior high schools
(AM 84) : la violence dans les collèges
- English is in the ascendant (AM 92) :
l'anglais a le vent en poupe (to the image of the rising star in English
corresponds the image of the sailing boat blown forward)
- You're welcome! : De rien, je t'en prie !
, Il n'y a pas de quoi ! (instead of tu es le bienvenu)
- We've got other fish to fry : Nous
avons d'autres chats à fouetter
- They're as like as two peas in a pod :
Ils se ressemblent comme deux gouttes d'eau
- He behaved like a bull in a china shop
: Il s'est comporté comme un éléphant dans un magasin de porcelaines
- to collect Social Security (US) :
toucher une pension de retraite
- buyers have been as rare as hen's teeth :
